Classic movie rental quest for early July

Classic movies July 2009

My New Years Resolution to watch more classic movies has been put on hold for a little while, for no better reason than the fact I forgot about it (oops). Then the other week at the library there was a horde, a horde! I tells ya. These are but some I got.

Thoughts:

12 Angry Men: I think I prefer the Jack Lemmon one, actually, that was made in the 1990s. Although Henry Fonda is terribly good I always find myself, when I watch him, thinking, “Goodness your daughter looks like you.” It’s distracting.

Confidential Report: On IMDB I saw a note about this movie where someone complained he felt this movie was arty for arts sake only and that it didn’t have much ‘depth’ (or words to that affect). I turned it off half way, so maybe that person was right. Or, I just wasn’t in the mood. But the screenplay was jerky and became tedious to bother following. A shame, as I adore Mr. Welles.

The Night of the Hunter: Goodness…how to describe? Hmm…At the halfway point it occurred to me that this movie could be seen in two ways; first as a ‘straight’ narrative and second as a allegory of the ‘good vs evil’ war. If one were to watch it as an allegory I feel perhaps it’s a more successful piece. Bob Mitchum is good – a tad corny, in bits, I would argue, but good.

I haven’t watched Captain Blood yet. I put in The Faerie Tale Theatre piece for my sister – look what our library’s suddenly got! I also borrowed The Princess and the Pea with Liza Minnelli! Oh, the memories!

Hell yeah to the frog prince! The Princess and the Pea is very good too- Liza Minnelli looks very pretty with long hair.
Sleeping Beauty is still the best though. “Nice statue…nice gold things…” The only bummer is that they have released so few of the collection on to DVD in Australia. I would like to see the Snow Queen again.
Oh, and I have Cinderella if you want to borrow it.

Oh my. Night of the Hunter was one of the most terrifying things I ever saw. And I was in my late 20s or so. Mitchum was fabulous in that movie.

I have the original version of ’12 Angry Men’ in my DVD collection. It’s a super film.
