The one where I wave a bottle of squeezy honey at my husband in a slightly unhinged fashion

honey

This seemingly innocuous bottle of honey caused quite the stir in our marriage last week.

You see, I despise these cleaning-disasters-in-wait; my husband on the other hand thinks that because it is a supposed ‘innovation’ in the way we spread this condiment over our bread that it must - nay, it is - even better than the original.

No, no, it’s not.

The debate erupted again when he found our existing bottle wilting in the middle like a three-day old gerbera and it trickling honey all over the (just cleaned) countertop.

His swearing was the precise right moment for me to throw in an ‘I-told-you-so’.

“This wouldn’t happen if you buy the normal pots or jars of honey like I do,” I said.

“If you squeezed it from the bottom and not the middle, it’d be fine,” he retorted.

“You say it like there’s not another two pairs of hands in this household, eager to try out their dextrous talents on the vulnerable mid-section of a soft plastic bottle.”

“That’s beside the point. Keep it out of their reach.”

“It doesn’t matter where you put it. Even in the highest point in the shelf there will come a time when it will go all Leaning Tower of Pisa and then we’ll be wondering why we’ve got ants.”

I think it was at this point that I’d won my point and he went skulking off.

What say you on squeezy honey?

Innovation or aberration of the foodly kind?

We buy our honey in 3kg tubs and they don’t make a squeezy bottle that big. :)

I buy honey in jars and I keep the jar inside one of my toughest Tupperware containers, in the pantry. If the jar is sticky I wash it off under hot water and put it straight in its box. Never had a problem with ants in the honey (but we get ants every summer, really badly, just not in the honey.)

We also buy in bulk - but then dispense in smaller containers.

I like the concept of the squeeze bottles (although the ones that you can store on their heads - the triangular ones are just ridiculous) but as you said, so do the ants.

Most recently we are resording to the spoon in the jar to make the best of all worlds.

The thing I hate about the squeezy bottles is that that always have honey dribble down the side and they therefore are always sticky. I usually prefer the pots and pop it in the microwave for 10-20 seconds or so to make it runny enough for my liking.

While we never had an argument over it, I tried and gave up on the squeezy honey bottles. Sticky, sticky, sticky. I buy a local brand in a 1kg tub, but the newer lid design of that tub is defective, so I now decant into an empty gatorade powder container that seems to have an ant proof lid - as long as I wipe it down occasionally.

I don’t think there is any foolproof answer to some of the messier condiments as long as you allow your kids to develop some independence.

I’ve resorted to the squeezy bottle with the mayonnaise though. I don’t know how the kids got mayonnaise completely up the handle of the knife, but they did - and the Daddy got very tetchy. Strangely enough the Praise brand (in the lite) works better in the squeezy bottle than the Kraft. Go figure.

We are also a buy in bulk honey tub family but we have used the squeezy bottles. I think the honey candies faster in them.

Squeezy bottles let the honey go hard quicker, hold less volume and are an over-priced convenience.
Gimme a hive and I’ll be happy :P

Umm, we buy those silly, bear-shaped bottles that always seem to excrete the honey through the very pores of the container.

But, boy, does it look cute while doing it!

Bettina - my grandparents have hives on their farm. It’s the best getting it fresh, eh?

And jumbo 3kg tubs? I’m so there, considering how quickly we go through the stuff

And D.Paul - somehow, your story doesn’t surprise me :) You big teddy, you.
