I am dying to write a post with the word “effulgent”* in it as a true and perfect adjective. Just to show off.
But it’s not going to happen today.
I do have a question though for children’s picture book lovers out there - what do you think are the particular best examples of cover art and design that you’ve seen? Mind, I’m most interested here in clean and bright aesthetics; not charcoals or heavy pencilling; nor watercolours, really. Kim and I are currently deliberating over what we think Surprise! ought to look like. I have some ideas, but I’m interested to see what you all might say. Please, also say you’ve never thought about it before, or that its not that important for your (or your child’s) overall appreciation of a narrative, if that is the case. It is all helpful.
Thanks!
*Anyone a fan of a particular television show will know who - and in what episode - makes especial use of that word, too. First person to guess gets…uh…a salute from me!
******
Last night I fished a lot of comments out of my spam filter which were sent there incorrectly. Some were from old friends (Karen Cheng!) and some new ones. So, so sorry! I hope it doesn’t happen again. Teach me not to check, won’t it?

I am a big fan of anything of Anthony Browne’s. His illustrations both on the cover and in the book always grab your attention.

As a kid I loved the Serendipity Series by Stephen Cosgrove, the illustrations by Robin James are stunning

“effulgent” - that would have to be from Spike in the Buffy episode that explains how he first became a vampire…

Marita - I liked that, yes, nice clean lines and layout. Balanced. Excellent choice, thank you

I really like the work of Craig Smith with kids books, but generally his illustrations tend to be more for light-hearted, humourous books. Maybe not suitable for your topic. He illustrates lots of the ABC Sing Books, and the Toocool series, which I always find amusing.

The fact that you decided to go for something bold and clean is already making it a winner. I can’t stand messy covers that look sketched by a brooding artist for children’s books.

I’m a fan of the more arty stuff and less cartoony. (In fact, possibly the “messy” covers that Michelle describes. I can’t remember anyone’s name at the moment, but the artists who did “The Quiltmaker’s Gift” and “The Rainbow Goblins” are wonderful.
