About Me

in Karen

This site is about our family: me (Karen), my husband (Adam) and our two children Keira (6) and Riley (4).

I used to look like this
(yes, this is one of those wanky glamour shots)

Now, for the most part, I look like this. Or in a similar capacity.

I was born and raised in the small town of Kempsey, NSW. At the time I could not wait to move away, but now think I was lucky to grow up in the country and am glad I did. Go figure.

I was raised a pretty strict Catholic. Now I suppose I’m what they call “lapsed” but let’s not get into semantics, okay? I enjoyed university so much I had a Master’s degree in Literature by the time I was twenty-one. If you think that sounds like bragging you could well be right. Like most youth, I drank too much. I still enjoy a drink but usually stay away from the stuff.

I am essentially a boring person, although a few crappy things have happened to me to round me out a little as an individual. I used to have an eating disorder. I have a mild form of anxiety. I’ve had a few illnesses which are too boring to mention here, but are in their own way still relevant.

I spend far too much time on the computer and have done so ever since since the 1980s.

I am a writer. “Oh God, another writer” you say. I try not to be too pretentious about my writing and I’m certainly not here on ‘Miscellaneous Mum’. If I had a dollar for every time some snark has written saying, “You call yourself a writer? Don’t you know how to write a complete sentence? YOU’VE PUT THE APOSTROPHE IN THE WRONG PLACE!” well, that would be a nice addition to the coffee fund. I am very serious when it comes to my offline work, but this has always been my ‘playground.’ Comprehende?

I get a little tired of Keira fondling my breasts.

Same with Riley.

Same with Adam.

I wish Keira would stop patting my stomach and saying “Baby in there?” Darling, whether it’s wishful thinking on your part, or desperate reassurance that it’s NOT going to happen, it kind-of hurts mum’s feelings. It’s not THAT big.

Hate mail and spam are deleted immediately. Just saying.

I have a mild form of anxiety too- always expecting that something bad will happen, or has happened, or might happen- inherited from one of the parents, surely…

Misc Mum, I am The Rebel Housewife in Atlanta, GA, US: Mom to 3, Author/Writer, Reader, Book Fanatic, and fellow ponderer. I’ve just found you through a post on ProBlogger.net/Darrin Rowse — we should be new best friends, seriously. So much in common, well, other than the fact that we’re half a world apart and you write with a much better accent than I do!

Can’t stay & visit at the moment, but I’ll be back around to visit!
Live, Love & Laugh,
Sherri

“Not ‘just’ a mum”. No truer words have been spoken!

Stumbled across your blog and like what I’m seeing! Me? Writer and mum (but not just).

Cheers!

Hi, I’m Janet in Kentucky. I found your site through NaBloPoMo blogroll and stopped by. Loved the faeces post. You can only really appreciate that one if you’ve experienced it. I almost named my son Riley (it’s a family name). I’ll definitely be checking back.

Hi! Found your link thru problogger. I am a mommy from the Philippines, but studied in Melbourne Uni for 2 years for my masters then came back here in my country last year. But after coming back here, I felt I needed to be a stay-at-home to take care of the kids, coz my husband is still in Oz studying. If i come back to the rat race, my kids would be left to household helps, which I can’t take, coz when we were still in Oz I realized the best thing for a mom is to see her kids growing up.

So now, even though many families here have help/nannies (which is ironic coz we’re not a rich country), I decided to take the more fulfilling but stressful route- take care of them fulltime without any nannies or any help. At the end of the day, I am happier – happy kind of tired, really.

Nice site! I’ll keep on coming back for sure I’ll add you up in my roll!
Cheers!

Hi Karen,

You didn’t say when exactly your birthday was? I want to wish you a happy birthday for this month generally then.

We have lots in common, Catholic origins, wild youths, love of study and plenty of variety on the job front. The differences are I’m older and my children are young adults (only 2, 17 & 18), I never looked as gorgeous as you do in that photo! , and I’m divorced.

I’m glad I went looking for youR birthday, cause now I know you a little better.

Play away and have fun. I’m doing a lot of blog writing too and trying not to be too anal about editing. Sometimes I spend four times as long editing, revising and correcting a piece than I do actually writing it. Painful really, and I’m sure typos still slip in. Fortunately I haven’t had any hate mail yet but if I do I’ll take a tip from you and just delete it. Keep up the great writing!

Hi Karen

I got here through a re-tweet from someone on Twitter and I’m glad I did :) I’m a Karen too, and a mum (3 boys under 5), and an Aussie and a writer so you could say we have a bit in common!! I’ve also been published in Melbourne’s Child and from reading your list I think we write about similar things. I’ve added you to my feed and I look forward to keeping up with what’s going on in your world. Take care.
